I hope you all had a beautiful Earth Day remembering all of the gifts and beauty that we receive. I had a stunning visitor I thought I should share with you! Here in Costa Rica, we have a unique washing machine that washes on one side, and has a spin cycle bucket on the other. I was doing a load of laundry, and when i went to remove the clothing to hang up to dry I noticed what at quick glance looked like a shoelace under the lid. Until I noticed it was scared and hissing at me. Not typical shoelace behavior.
This cutie is a Parrot Snake. Pretty harmless, and loves to hunt lizards which is a shared passion with my cats. Absolutely striking beauty and what an incredible reminder on earth day to appreciate the creatures we share this earth with. Little guy had a hard time getting him off of my porch, I guess I wasn't scary enough and he was waiting to join me for tea? It's a blessing to witness wildlife. Sadly we have hurt so many habitats, and have forgotten how to coexist. I hope to continue being curious enough to learn, and willing enough to do what I can to protect nature. Earth Day everyday. ♥
Today Is World Book Day
Did you know World Book Day was inspired by a tradition that began in Barcelona, Spain?
Back in the 1920s, booksellers in Spain created a celebration to honor literature, eventually landing on April 23, a date tied to the deaths of literary giants like William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes. In many parts of Spain, it became tradition to exchange books and roses.
Today, when I think about books, I don’t just think about stories or learning.
I think about how easy it is to forget that the ability to read as women was once restricted, or denied. There were women who fought, resisted, and insisted on education… so that generations later, I could sit with a book in my hands without question. I don’t take that lightly. I honor the women who made literacy possible for us.
And knowing this celebration began in Spain makes me smile, because in many Spanish cities, World Book Day still feels like a festival. ( Basically their Valentines Day) Streets filled with books, flowers, and people choosing stories to carry home.
